Established in 1999, the International Disability Alliance (IDA) is the network of global and regional organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) promoting the effective implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. IDA currently comprises eight global and three regional DPOs, with two other regional DPOs having observer status.
With member organizations around the world, IDA represents the estimated 650 million people worldwide living with a disability. This is the world’s largest – and most frequently overlooked – minority group.
IDA was instrumental in establishing the International Disability Caucus (IDC), the network of global, regional and national organizations of persons with disabilities and allied NGOs, which was to become a key player in the negotiation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). IDA is now a major international player in the support of the CRPD, both on the international level and the regional/national level.
In order to generate a wider coalition to promote the implementation of the CRPD, IDA has established the IDA CRPD Forum, a structure which is open to any international, regional or national organisation which promotes the CRPD and accepts the DPO leadership.
In order to ensure maximum level of effectiveness, joint meetings of IDA and the steering committee of the IDA CRPD Forum are held twice a year. An IDA Secretariat with a presence in New York and Geneva is in charge of the daily management of the network.
The post of IDA Chair rotates annually. The IDA Chair also acts as the Chair of the IDA CRPD Forum. The current Chair is Jan-Peter Strömgren, Chair of IFHOH. He will hold the post until 30 June 2010.
IDA (CRPD Forum), with its unique composition as a network of the foremost international disability rights organizations and affiliated NGOs, is the most authoritative representative voice of persons with disabilities and acknowledged as such by the United Nations system both in New York and Geneva.
Among other activities, IDA is the key focal point for the disability rights movement in developing an ongoing relationship between the UN organs and civil society, including DESA, the OHCHR, the Conference of States Parties, special procedures, and most recently, the CRPD Committee. The IDA (CRPD Forum) is also committed to building the capacity of national DPOs with special attention to the Global South, in order to support the national efforts toward ratification, implementation and monitoring of the CRPD.
