Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Third session (February 22-26 2010)
The 3rd session of the CRPD Committee will take place from 22nd to 26th February, in Geneva. The draft agenda and programme of work for this session are now available on the CRPD Committee website. Most of the meetings of the Committee are planned to be closed and will focus on finalising rules of procedure and working methods. The Committee will also discuss follow-up issues related to the day of general discussion on Article 12 (including the option to draft a General Comment on Article 12) as well as plans for a day of general discussion to be held at the fourth session of the CRPD Committee. IDA has invited all members of the CRPD Committee to a joint meeting in the afternoon of Sunday 21, the day before the CRPD Committee will meet. Second session (October 2009)
IDA was present at the second session of the CRPD Committee, most of which was held as a closed meeting.
On October 22nd, a day of general discussion on article 12 was held which included a good number of presentations from representatives of organisations of persons with disabilities, including representatives from IDA members Inclusion International and World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry.

The CRPD Committee held new elections to the Bureau of the Committee which led to the election of Australian Ron McCallum as incoming Chair of the Committee who will take up this position on the first day of the third session of the Committee. Mohammed Al-Tarawneh, Ana Pelaez and Jia Yang were elected as Vice-Chairs of the Committee and Edah Maina as Rapporteur.
First session of the CRPD Committee (February 2009)
IDA (CRPD Forum) attended the first meeting of the CRPD Committee and addressed, among others, the members of the CRPD Committee at the session devoted to NGOs. IDA (CRPD Forum) advocated for the meetings of the Committee to be open to NGOs, which was mostly the case.
Many of the IDA (CRPD Forum) suggestions made prior and during the CRPD Committee session were accepted by the CRPD Committee including the holding of a day of general discussion at its second session, to be held in October 2009.
The IDA (CRPD Forum) had made concrete proposals related to the different documents that need to be produced by the CRPD Committee and adopted at their second session to be held in October 2009: rules of procedure, working methods and reporting guidelines, as well as the programme and approach for the day of general discussion on article 12 of the CRPD Legal capacity.

In 2008, IDA (CRPD Forum) contributed to the process of selection of the CRPD Committee through a questionnaire which was completed by 14 of the 23 candidates.
