First Conference of States Parties (October 2008)

The first Conference of States Parties set a precedent for this by holding a panel discussion. One of the panel experts was an IDA (CRPD Forum) representative who was complemented by an intervention from the floor from an IDA (CRPD Forum) representative, which further clarified the fact that NGOs could intervene during the Conference of States Parties.

Prior to the first Conference, the IDA CRPD Forum prepared a list of criteria that it believed best reflected the qualifications demanded of Committee members, as well as a list of procedural criteria to ensure that the nomination and election process was made public and transparent.

IDA CRPD Forum appealed to all governments to fully comply with these guidelines as a further example of their support for the CRPD. Following the principles outlined in these materials guaranteed that the spirit that characterized this ground-breaking process from its start would prevail in the election of Committee members.

These criteria will be equally relevant in the upcoming 2010 election of a new group of Committee members.
