As one of the international community’s central decision-making bodies, the United Nations General Assembly is a focal point for ongoing monitoring and advocacy by the IDA (CRPD Forum).
In recent General Assembly sessions, IDA and its DPO members have made significant strides in petitioning the Assembly to integrate the rights of persons with disabilities into its resolutions and logistical operations.
At its 63rd session (2008), the General Assembly took up a number of important proposals made by IDA (CRPD Forum) in its recurring resolution on disability and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In particular, the Assembly included in its resolution the IDA proposal to integrate the rights ofpersons with disabilities into UN development activities and to provide guidelines for UN country teams.
Additionally, IDA (CRPD Forum) continues to monitor and influence the negotiation process of the two disability-specific General Assembly resolutions as well as other mainstream General Assembly resolutions.
In the coming years, IDA (CRPD Forum) will also seek to ensure that the UN Voluntary Fund on Disability is used to finance the participation of DPOs in the annual Conference of States Parties as well as ensuring additional meeting time for the CRPD Committee.
