The Global Concerns Trust was established in December 1996 in Scotland by Alastair Christie. GCT evolved from a concept developed from 1987-1996 by Alastair Christie in Singapore. We are an international development charity which supports grassroots development and environmental projects in Africa and Asia.

Over the years, GCT has worked linking schools, organisations and individuals in a supportive and learning relationship, pioneering grassroots projects in rural and urban environments. We support projects at the cutting edge of development, working in partnership with inspiring individuals and institutions at a local level.

We have a history of working with grassroots initiatives in India, Malawi and Kenya. In 2005, our partner organisation Global Concerns India was established, to develop our work in South India. Global Concerns India is based in Bangalore, Karnataka.

We do not solicit approaches as our capacity is small. We are happy to network with similar organisations working in similar areas of development.

Stereotypes, attitudes and behaviours
The Global Concerns Trust work with MACOHA (Malawi Council for the Handicapped) and KODO (Kuthandiza Osayenda Disability Outreach)to decrease stigma attached to disability in rural Malawi by providing training, tools and support to adults with disabilities and supporting them to start successful and sustainable businesses. This results in a change in perception within rural communities towards people with disabilities and demonstrates their potential to be successful business leaders who contribute economically and socially.

Timeframe and/or implementation plan
By October 2018 we will have supported 355 adults with disabilities living in rural areas of Malawi to start sustainable businesses and become financially independent, 50% of whom will be women. We will work to source funding to continue and expand our disability specific projects in Malawi, to include the provision of disability mainstreaming training to a wide range of international development organisations working in country.

Skills development for decent work
The Global Concerns Trust has worked with MACOHA (Malawi Council for the Handicapped) and KODO (Kuthandiza Osayenda Disability Outreach)since 2007, to offer comprehensive vocational training to adults with disabilities living in rural areas in Malawi. Our beneficiaries receive the tools and training needed to start sustainable businesses and the post training support to help them expand their enterprises. We will seek funding to expand our disability specific projects in Malawi to further rural districts.
