Human Rights Commitee (ICCPR)
The Human Rights Committee, monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) and its optional protocols, the first of which gives the Committee competence to examine individual complaints with regard to alleged violations of the Covenant by States parties.
The Center for Civil and Political Rights has prepared NGO Guidelines on the reporting process of the Human Rights Committee.
IDA monitors the work of the Human Rights Committee and advocates for the mainstreaming of disability rights in the carrying out of its mandate.

The Human Rights Committee met from 12 to 30 March 2012 for its 104th session.

Side Event
On 21 March 2012 (first UN recognised celebration of World Down Syndrome Day), in follow up to the OHCHR study on Article 29 and in particular the recommendation directed to the Human Rights Committee to revise their General Comment no 25 on the right to political participation, IDA, with the support of Open Society Foundations, organised a side event at the Human Rights Committee session to discuss directly with members their role with respect to the political participation of persons with disabilities. The panel of speakers included: Diane Richler (IDA Chair), Gabor Gombos (independent expert and CRPD Committee member), Shantha Rau Barriga (Human Rights Watch), Maria Alejandra Villanueva (Peruvian self advocate), Oliver Lewis (Mental Disability Advocacy Centre). There was also a video message to the Committee members sent in by Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. Further information on this side event.
Task Forces (for adoption of List of Issues)
The Human Rights Committee also adopted the list of issues for the Philippines, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Paraguay, Portugal and Turkey.
