Victim Assistance in Mine Ban Treaty

The Mine Ban Treaty (also referred to as the Ottawa Convention) is the first disarmament treaty which includes a reference to victim assistance.

The main objective of IDA is to ensure a clear alignment of the victim assistance work of the MBT with the CRPD, which will also be relevant for the victim assistance work in the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), which is soon to enter into force and which includes more developed references to victim assistance as well as a reference to the CRPD in its preamble.

IDA became involved in the victim assistance work of the MBT in the run up to the Second Review Conference of the MBT which was held in Cartagena (Colombia) between November 29th and December 4th 2009.

IDA made suggestions to the section on victim assistance of the Cartagena action plan as well as to the guidance document on victim assistance which accompanies the action plan, both of which were adopted at the Cartagena conference.
