New York, 10 July 2014—The International Disability Alliance (IDA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Vladimir Cuk to the position of Executive Director of the Alliance. Mr. Cuk will be responsible for coordinating the Alliance Secretariat in New York and Geneva and the Secretariat’s advocacy within the framework of the United Nations (UN) system and relationships with UN agencies, the World Bank and other international human rights organisations.

“The International Disability Alliance is extremely fortunate to have someone with the experience and skills of Mr. Cuk to lead our Secretariat and advocacy work,” said Ms. Maryanne Diamond, chair of the Alliance. “He is truly dedicated to the rights of all persons with disabilities and I look forward to working with him over the next two years.”

Mr. Cuk has spent the past 15 years working to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, most recently in his roles as Acting Executive Director (since July 2013) and Head of the New York Office of the Alliance. He previously worked to promote the rights of young persons with disabilities in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the United States. Mr. Cuk received a Masters Degree in Disability and Development from the University of Illinois at Chicago, has published a book, several articles and encyclopaedia entries and has delivered over 100 presentations and workshops on the rights of persons with disabilities across the globe. Mr. Cuk began his role as Executive Director in July 2014.

The International Disability Alliance was established in 1999 as an alliance of eight global and four regional organisations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) and their families, representing an estimated one billion persons with disabilities worldwide. IDA’s unique composition as a network of international DPOs allows it to act as an authoritative and representative voice of persons with disabilities in the United Nations system, both in New York and Geneva.
