Separately, but during the first week of the HLPF, the President of the General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft, will be holding a high-level discussion on human rights, for which José Vierra, of the World Blind Union, has been invited to to deliver a speech on combatting discrimination and inequalities, on behalf of persons with disabilities.

In partnership with other members of civil society, including Together 2030 and Amnesty International, IDA will be hosting a side event to the debate, on the issue of space for civil society to participate meaningfully at the UN and in the 2030 Agenda.

Town hall-style discussion at the President of General Assembly’s High-level Thematic Debate on Human Rights to address questions such as:

  • Is the UN system still open to include active civil society participation?
  • Do Member States value and encourage input from civil society into processes?
  • Is there risk that we are sliding backward to a UN in which Member States hide behind the General Assembly’s rules of procedure and call for intergovernmental processes consequently excluding civil society?
