Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction - Kiren Rijiju

The Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) was held in New Delhi from November 2nd to 5th, 2016, bringing together over 4,000 participants from across 51 countries.

As outcomes, the Conference and related events delivered the PDF icon New Delhi Declaration 2016the PDF icon Asia Regional Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR 2015-2030 and the 'Stakeholder Action Statement from the Organization and Individuals working on disability-inclusion to be appended with the Asia Regional Plan 2015-2030' (DiDRRN.net). Good practices and lessons learned from the Sendai Framework implementation were also shared during sessions.

The contribution of persons with disabilities to disaster risk reduction and building resilient societies is emphasised within the Asia Regional Plan 2015-2030, with six explicit mentions, and the following text:

Adopting an inclusive approach – via multi-sector/stakeholder DRR platforms, both at national and local levels – is particularly important. It should embrace the leadership of persons with disability, women, children and youth and the significant contribution of the business sector.

The New Delhi Declaration 2016 also calls on all governments and stakeholders to: "Encourage meaningful participation and support representation of women, children and youth, and persons with disabilities in leadership role for disaster risk reduction."

DPOs and NGOs are now preparing for the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2017 in Cancun, Mexico, 22-26 May 2017. Further info at www.unisdr.org/conferences/2017/globalplatform/en
