The ratification by Latvia of the CRPD on 1-March-2010 increases to 81 the number of ratifications to the CRPD, while the OP has 51 ratifications. The number of signatures to the CRPD is 144, while the OP has 88 signatures.

Human Rights Council: Mexico and New Zealand co-sponsor a draft resolution on the rights of persons with disabilities to be adopted at this session

Mexico and New Zealand are co-sponsoring a draft reslution on the rights of persons with disabilities to be adopted at the 13th session of the Human Rights Council.

The topic of the resolution is the role of international cooperation in support of national efforts for the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities.

The resolution requests that the next OHCHR thematic study focus on article 32 on international cooperation.

The first informal meeting on this draft resolution was held Wednesday, March 10th, at 15h00 in Room XXV, Palais des Nations, Geneva.

Human Rights Council: more information on the side event on Article 32 of the CRPD and Panel on persons with disabilities is now available

On March 5th (15h00 to 18h00) the Human Rights Council held a panel on the structure and role of national mechanisms for the implementation and monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Ms. Regina Atalla, President of RIADIS (Red Latinoamericana de Organizaciones no Gubernamentales de Personas con Discapacidad y sus Familias), member of the International Disability Alliance (IDA), was one of the panellists of this event.

The same afternoon (13h15-14h45), the Permanent Missions of Mexico and New Zealand, together with IDA, co-sponsored a parallel event on Article 32 of the CRPD, focusing on international cooperation.

The 13th session of the Human Rights Council is taking place from 1-26 March 2010 in Geneva.

On February 18th, 2010, France became the 80th Country to ratify the CRPD

The ratification by France of the CRPD and its accesion to the Optional Protocol (OP) on February 18th, 2010 increases to 80 the number of ratifications to the CRPD, while the OP has 51 ratifications, with this ratification the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will increase from 12 to 18 members in 2011.

The renovation of 6 of the CRPD Committee members (those whose term expires in 2010 can run one more term) and the election of the 6 new positions will happen at the Conference of States Parties that will take place in New York on September 1-3.

Zambia ratified the CRPD on February 1st, 2010

The Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution on the situation of Haiti which includes a reference to persons with disabilities

The Human Rights Council has held a Special Session on the situation in Haiti. The Council has adopted a resolution which includes a reference to persons with disabilities.

IDA delivered a short statement and requested the Human Rights Council to include persons with disabilities in the resolution.

Draft agenda and programme of work for the 3rd session of the CRPD Committee are now available on the CRPD Committee website.

Programme of work

Most of the meetings of the Committee are planned to be closed and will focus on finalising rules of procedure and working methods.

The committee will also discuss follow-up issues related to the day of general discussion on article 12 (including the option to draft a general comment on article 12) as well as plans for a day of general discussion to be held at the fourth session of the CRPD Committee.

IDA has invited all members of the CRPD Committee to a joint meeting in the afternoon of Sunday 21, the day before the CRPD Committee will meet.
