The High-level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place from 9-18 July 2018, at the UN Headquarters in New York. The theme of this year’s Forum is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies” and the Goals under review include:

  • Goal 6 Clean water and sanitation
  • Goal 7 Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal 11 Sustainable cities and communities
  • Goal 12 Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 15 Life on land
  • Goal 17 Partnerships for the Goals

This year, over 30 persons with disabilities and advocates from all over the world will represent the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities at the Forum! They will participate in pre-HLPF meetings, deliver official speeches at the Forum, participate in bilateral meetings with the Member States, UN agencies and UN Country Teams and will attend numerous other events. In addition, the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities will host a side event on 11 July entitled “Goal 11: Inclusion of persons with disabilities in societies.”

To prepare for the HLPF, participants will attend an orientation meeting on Sunday, 8 July organized by the Major Groups and other Stakeholders Coordination Mechanism (CM) in partnership with UN DESA/OISC. If you are interested and would like to learn about HLPF Click here to join the meeting from your PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android, on 8 July from 9am to 3pm EST LIVE.

While the HLPF will officially start on Monday, the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities has started engaging in national advocacy to influence the voluntary national reviews (VNRs) to be presented during the Ministerial week. Forty-seven reporting countries are expected to receive questions from civil society representatives. Persons with disabilities contributed to 28 collaborative statements with questions that will be asked to government officials during the HLPF. We will share information on how to watch the governments reporting and being questioned on the situation of persons with disabilities.

Furthermore, the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities participated in all the Ministerial Declaration negotiations that will be adopted during the HLPF.  At this point, the final version of Declaration has not yet been released and there are no more open negations. During the four weeks of negotiations, the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities made three interventions and recommended strengthening the resolution for persons with disabilities.
