From 6 to 10 August, the Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan together with the Commission for the rights of people with disabilities named after Kairat Imanaliyev, with support and facilitation from the International Disability Alliance (IDA), held a technical workshop on Reporting the SDGs implementation in line with the CRPD in Kazakhstan. The workshop also counts with the presence of national DPOs, such as Zhiger and Azamat Aleuetty Public Foundations.

The workshop was attended by representatives of organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) and their families from different regions of Kazakhstan, including little people, people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.

The workshop was jointly facilitated by national, regional and international experts, as follows: Veniamin Alayev, Aigul Shakibayeva, Almagul Seisenova, Lukerya Lonshakova, Gunta Anca (European Disability Forum), Orsolya Bartha (IDA) and Janina Arsenjeva (as an independent expert), with expert contribution from national consultant Oleg Kozyrev.

DPOs from Kazakhstan are preparing a parallel report on the implementation of the UN CRPD, that will be used in 2019 to contribute to the voluntary national review of Kazakhstan at the High-level Political Forum, in New York.

The agenda of the week included a general overview on the CRPD and SDGs, UN monitoring mechanisms, alternative reports development, the role of the DPO movement around the world, among others.

This training is part of the Human Rights/ Social Inclusion programs of the Soros Foundation-Kazakhstan and of the broader training support on the CRPD and SDGs to DPOs led by IDA.

Testimonies

I am very excited about this summer school and I am proud to be a part of these changes.

With the help of suggestions and guidance made by facilitators, we understand the core concepts. And now I know how this works. I want to share my knowledge with other colleagues as soon as I get back to my city” Nurzhamal Saulembekova
