The International Disability Alliance (IDA) congratulates Lenin Moreno on his election as President-elect of Ecuador. This is the first time that a person with disability has been elected for such a distinguished position while at the same time proudly identifying his disability. The achievement sends an important message that persons with disabilities can aspire to the highest level of public service. IDA brings together over 1,100 organisations of persons with disabilities and their families from across eight global and six regional networks. IDA therefore looks forward to intensifying the collaboration with Ecuador and President Lenin Moreno to implement of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and to foster disability-inclusive Sustainable Development achievements.

Between 2013 and 2016, Moreno served as the UN Special Envoy on Disability and Accessibility, appoined by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
