The Legal Capacity Task Force brings together people with disabilities, family members and allies from all over the world. The Task Force is based on the leadership of organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs), the text of Article 12 of the Convention, the paradigm of supported decision-making and the right of persons with disabilities to make their own decisions.
In an active e-forum that is hosted in both English and Spanish, the Task Force drafts guidelines and position papers, plans campaigns and strategy, and writes advocacy letters in solidarity with people with disabilities in all countries working for full implementation and compliance with Article 12, respecting the right of persons with disabilities to make their own decisions and the model of supported decision-making.
In 2008, the Legal Capacity Task Force undertook an innovative effort to recognize the aspirations of people with disabilities in decision making. Top law scholars from around the world joined together to draft a legal opinion designed to assist informed understanding of the supported decision making model, which is outlined in Article 12 of the Convention of the Rights on Persons with Disabilities.
