The International Disability Alliance (IDA) and the European Disability Forum (EDF) co-facilitated a 1 day workshop in the lead up to the review of Albania by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2019. This workshop was organised by EDF and the Albanian Disability Rights Foundation, in partnership with the EU and UNICEF and took place on November 21st, prior to the National Conference “Translating generalities of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into tangible actions”, organised and support by the same institutions.

The workshop brought together organisations of persons with disabilities, representing diverse groups, as well as key allies currently advocating for the implementation of the CRPD. In the morning session, the co-facilitators provided a general overview on the main elements of the Convention and presented in detail the steps of the CRPD Committee review process, highlighting and explaining the opportunities for civil society to address the Committee and provide its views on the reality of the rights of persons with disabilities in the country.

In the upcoming months, organizations of persons with disabilities will seek to coordinate to develop their written submission to the CRPD Committee and to interact with the pre-sessional Working Group of the Committee, prior to the adoption of the List of Issues next April. The guidance and elements provided during the workshop will probably contribute to their efficient participation in the CRPD Committee process.
