The International Disability Alliance (IDA) is proud to announce the adoption of its new Reasonable Accommodation Policy, designed to ensure that all employees with disabilities, are provided with the necessary support to perform their roles effectively and without discrimination. This policy was officially adopted by the IDA Board during an online meeting on May 27, 2024.

The Reasonable Accommodation Policy is firmly grounded in the principles and standards of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), including General Comments No.6 and No.8. It aims to eliminate barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from fully participating in the workforce by providing the necessary modifications and adjustments in the workplace. The policy reflects IDA’s ongoing commitment to non-discrimination and equality.

“This policy is a vital step towards ensuring that our organization embodies the principles of inclusivity and equality that we advocate for globally,” said Dr. Nawaf Kabbara, President of IDA. “By adopting this policy, we are not only complying with international standards but also setting an example for other organizations to follow.”

The policy applies to all employees and Board members, covering all aspects of employment, including recruitment, training, career development, and conditions of work. It also extends to all Board-related functions, ensuring full participation in meetings and decision-making processes.

Dialogue between IDA and the employee/Board members is at the heart of the process. Accommodation requests will be handled through a confidential process, with each request assessed on an individualized and case-by-case basis. The policy outlines a two-phase independent external assessment to ensure independent and robust decision-making. Accommodations will be periodically reviewed to ensure they continue to meet the needs of both the employee and the organization. Employees will have the opportunity to provide feedback and request reconsideration if they are not satisfied with the accommodations provided.

IDA’s Reasonable Accommodation Policy will be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure it remains aligned with CRPD standards and the evolving needs of the organization and its employees. The adoption of this policy marks a significant milestone in IDA’s efforts to promote inclusivity and equality in the workplace, setting a strong foundation for continued advocacy and leadership in the global disability movement.
