11TH SESSION OF THE CONFERENCE OF STATES PARTIES TO THE CRPD, JUNE, NEW YORK, USA

With regards to submissions for statements during the General Debate and Plenary sessions of the 11th Session of the COSP to the CRPD, please note that the UN has changed their rules this year. Organisations that have either ECOSOC consultative status or COSP accreditation are able to register their interest in speaking at the Official COSP sessions. You can submit your application by clicking this link, click 'Fill Our Form', log in using your CSONet, complete the requested info and indicate which specific meeting you wish to make an intervention during the 11th session of the Conference of States Parties (12-14 June):

2. TREATY BODIES REVIEWS, GENEVA 2017-2018

  • COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD: The Committee on the Rights of the Child held its 78th session (15-January – 2 May 2018) in which it reviewed Angola, Argentina, Lesotho, Montenegro and Norway. The public meetings have been web-casted live by the UN Office of Geneva (click here to access).

3. SDGS MONITORING PROCESS

HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM, 9-18 JULY 2018, NEW YORK, USA

  • At the 2018 High-level Political Forum (HLPF), held from 9 to 18 July 2018 in New York, USA, 47 countries will deliver their country reports on SDG implementation. If you would like to participate in the stakeholder statement and questions that will be delivered during your country’s review during the HLPF, please click here. Kindly note that you do not have to be physically present to participate, but can contribute remotely by using the above link. Deadline for contributions is 18 June 2018. WEBINAR ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS FOR EUROPEAN ORGANIZATIONS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, 24 MAY 2018

  • EDF held a webinar on 24 May 2018 on the Sustainable Development Goals in order to prepare to the HLPF European organisations of persons with disabilities. Click here to read the concept note. THE STAKEHOLDER GROUP OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES’ VIDEO ABOUT PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES PARTICIPATING AT THE HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM

  • The Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities produced the first video about persons with disabilities participating at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The video provides information about the HLPF and how persons with Disabilities can engage in the process. Click here to watch the video.

4. ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST WEEKS

  • WORLD CONFERENCE ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION: The Second World Conference on Disability and Disaster Risk Management was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 15 – 17 May 2018. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Risk Management and comprised over 700 international, regional and local stakeholders. IDA members attended the meeting represented by Katabwena Tawaka, Lanieta Tuimabu and Saveira Tinai, from PDF, Otto Mazariegos, from RIADIS, and Sam Badege, from WNUSP. They participated in the review of the Dhaka Declaration adopted by the conference in 2015 and contributed to the drafting of the Dhaka Declaration 2018. The Dhaka Declaration provides concrete recommendations, global commitments and targets, as well as indicators to ensure the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction includes persons with disabilities.   • IASC TASK TEAM ON INCLUSION OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN HUMANITARIAN ACTION:AFRICA REGIONAL CONSULTATION: ADF, in partnership with the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Task Team on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action and IDA (co-chair of the Task Team) and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg and the Women’s Refugee Committee, held a regional multi-stakeholder consultation for the African region in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 23 – 24 May 2018.  The workshop brought together more than 60 participants comprising organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs), UN agencies, ICRC, humanitarian and development stakeholders and governments based in the African region. The aim of the consultation was to support the development of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Guidelines on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action (“the Guidelines”).  More information on the event is available on IDA’s website.

5. UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

JUNE                                                                                                                            

  • 2018 Helen Keller World Conference: The 11th Helen Keller World Conference will take place on 19-27 June 2018 in Benidorm, Spain. With the main topic: “Our rights; Our Voice; We lead the Way”, the 11th HKWC 2018 will focus on strengthening human rights, democracy and equality through the full and equal inclusion of persons with deafblindness in all aspects of the global, regional, national and local society in which we live. Registration forms are available for download on WFDB’s website.
  • COSP: The 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD will take place on 12-14 June 2018, at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. Among other agenda items, the session will expect to feature an election of 9 members of the CRPD Committee.

JULY

  • 2018 UK DISABILITY SUMMIT: IDA will be co-hosting the first UK global disability summit with the UK Department for International Development (DFID) on 24 July 2018, at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in London, United Kingdom.  The objectives of the Summit are to: raise global attention and focus on a neglected area; to bring in new voices and approaches to broaden engagement; to mobilize new global and national commitments on disability, and to showcase good practices and evidence from across the world.
  • 2018 HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM: The 2018 session of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place from 10-18 July 2018 in New York, USA.

AUGUST

  • CRPD: The 20th Session of the CRPD committee will take place from 20 August 2018 to 7 September 2017, in Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland.

OCTOBER

  • UN WORLD DATA FORUM: The UN World Data Forum 2018 will take place in Dubai, UAE from 22-24 October 2018. The event will bring together data leaders from diverse stakeholder groups, including national and international statistical systems, academia, business community and civil society. The aim of the forum is to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, identify solutions, discuss future strategies, and provide mutual learning opportunities on a wide variety of topics. 6. IDA MEMBERS

African Disability Forum

  • Mr Berhanu TEFERA will hold the position of Executive Director of the African Disability Forum from 1 June 2018.

European Disability Forum

  • EDF is preparing the third EDF Human Rights Report and is now collecting information on the topic of equality in the EU Member States, and in particular on the implementation of Article 5 of the CRPD at national and local levels. Please send to Marine Uldry (marine.uldry [at] edf-feph.org) all relevant information or contact details of persons from your national organisations who could provide us with updated information on the issue.  
  • An event entitled “Disabilities and workEuropean perspectives” will be held on 21 and 22 June 2018 at Quartz-Brest, France in order to celebrate the 100 years since the introduction of the law that took into account the work of people with disabilities. The aim of the event is to discuss, share ideas and experiences, and take the time to think about the conditions of professional inclusion and consider new perspectives at National and European level.   • EDF held it’s third Bridging the Gap Webinar-Disability Inclusive Development on 24 May 2018 (English session). The purpose of the session was to review the provisions on disability-inclusive development and international cooperation; to provide suggestions for practical strategies for ensuring that all
    aspects of national and international development efforts are inclusive
    of persons with disabilities; to present examples on how different forms of international cooperation can support the implementation of the CRPD in developing countries, and to recommend proposals. Please click here to download more information on the third webinar. 

World Federation of the Deaf

  • WFD is holding its 18th World conference in Paris, France, from 23-27 July 2019. Contribute to ensuring SIGN LANGUAGE RIGHTS FOR ALL by submitting an abstract in one of the six Commissions:

  2. Deaf Education
  3. International Cooperation and Development
  4. Technology and Accessibility
  5. Health
  6. Employment

7. UN SYSTEM, AGENCIES AND MECHANISM

  • UNICEF: UNICEF is making efforts to identify, map and highlight exciting and effective solutions to some of the most critical issues facing adolescents and young people. They are seeking information on solutions – approaches, models or programmes –  that address:
    • Secondary-age education
    • Skills development and training
    • Girls and empowerment

The goal of the effort is to take stock of successful solutions in practice around the world and identify those that have the potential for scale. The information you provide will be curated and presented to highlight successes, model good practices and set a course towards improving the lives and futures of young people.   • WEBINAR ON EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND READING: REACH and the Global Reading Network are hosting a webinar on “Getting early grade reading right: A case for investing in quality Early Childhood Education programs”, on 11 June 2018 at 10 am – 11 am Eastern Standard Time. In this webinar Sheila Manji – an early child education expert- will outline the evidence base for how children learn to read at the early years and the critical importance of developing a strong foundation, in reading and all developmental domains, as a prerequisite to all later reading and learning success.   • HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH: HRW recently published a report on people with disabilities living in institutions in Brazil. The report is entitled: "They say until they die". A lifetime of isolation and neglect in institutions for people with disabilities in Brazil. Click here to read the report.
  • ZERO PROJECT: The Zero Project team invites leading experts and organizations to nominate Innovative Practices and Policies concerning this year’s topic: Independent Living and Political Participation. #ZeroCall19. The “Innovative Practices and Innovative Policies 2019” will be selected by the Zero Project network of experts in a multistep process, and will be: 
    - Featured in the Zero Project Report 2019
    - Their representatives will be invited to speak at the Zero Project Conference in Vienna (Austria) in February 2019.

  • PLANET ABLED: Planet Abled is an organization based in India which aims to provide accessible travel solutions and leisure excursions for people with different disabilities. Inclusive tours are conducted based on Universal Design concepts. The organisation has also been recently awarded as one of the best innovative practice by Zero Project. Click here to know more.

9. JOB OFFERS

  • IDDC: The International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC) is recruiting a new IDDC Coordinator. The job advert is available on the IDDC website. Deadline for applications is 29 May 2018 at noon.
  • DISABILITY RIGHTS FUND: The Disability Rights Fund is recruiting a Project Officer to manage a funding stream of grants to organizations of persons with disabilities in Commonwealth countries under the “Commonwealth Leaves No One Behind” project. Application Deadline is 22 June 2018. Read more and apply.
  • SIGHTSAVERS: Sightsavers is seeking to recruit a Global Technical Lead to guide and drive its work in disability-inclusive economic empowerment. The main focus of this role will initially cover projects in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Bangladesh. Closing Date for application is 30 June 2018. Read more and apply here.
  • SCHOOL OF LAW & CENTRE FOR DISABILITY LAW AND POLICY: The School of Law & Centre for Disability Law and Policy are currently recruiting an Established/Full Professor of Law (Disability Law, Equality Law or European Union Law). This post is a full-time permanent / tenured post.
