Opening of the 22nd Session of the CRPD Committee (26 Aug 2019 – 20 Sep 2019)
Geneva, 26 August 2019 – The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities opens its 22nd session today at 10.00 hours (CET) during which it will review Albania, Greece, India, Iraq, Kuwait and Myanmar, and - under the second and third review cycle - it will review Australia, Ecuador and El Salvador. It will also initiate the review cycle under the simplified reporting procedure by adopting list of issues prior to reporting on Canada and Ukraine.
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD Committee) is the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by the States Parties. All States Parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights of persons with disabilities are being implemented. The Committee examines each report, holds an interactive dialogue with the State delegation in a public session and makes recommendations on the steps which should be taken to improve CRPD implementation.
During this session, the Committee will review Albania, Greece, India, Iraq, Kuwait and Myanmar, and - under the second and third review cycle - it will review Australia, Ecuador and El Salvador. It will also initiate the review cycle under the simplified reporting procedure by adopting the list of issues prior to reporting for Canada and Ukraine.
The Committee also plans to continue discussing matters related to the process of the future General Comment on Article 11. In this regard, the Chair of the working group will provide updated information on the progress made so far.
The CRPD/CRC Committees joint working group on children with disabilities will hold its second meeting on September 14, where it will present the advancements on the review process of both Committees’ jurisprudence and working methods.
On September 2, at 1.30 pm, Women with Disabilities India Network will host a side-event, while on September 11, at 1.45 pm, Organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) fromAustraliawill host a side event in Room XVII.
This 22nd session will be immediately followed by the CRPD Committee’s 12th pre-session: it will take place from 23 to 27 September 2019 during which it will adopt the list of issues on Djibouti, France, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mexico, Singapore, Switzerland. It also will adopt the List of issues prior to reporting on Mauritius and Slovakia.
On September 24, at 9.00 am, the Swiss Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in International
Cooperation will host a side event in Room XVII on the “Challenges and achievements in Switzerland’s international cooperation: Art. 11 & 32 CRPD”.
All States reports and public written contributions by organizations of persons with disabilities, and other documents relevant to States review processes are available at the website of the Committee on its 22nd session and on its 12th pre-session.

The public sessions of the CRPD Committee (see below), including State party reviews of Albania, Australia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Greece, India, Iraq, Kuwait and Myanmar, will be webcast live by the United Nations Office of Geneva on UNTV at https://bit.ly/2ZrNr7l.
Webcast will be provided in ENGLISH, International Sign, National Sign language and national language of the countries (ensured when language is a UN language).
If audio is provided on a national language of a country which is not a UN language, it will be done so under the label “ORIGINAL” in the UN WebTV site.
