The 20th Regular Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) took place in Geneva from 18 June - 6 July 2012.

Resolutions:

During the session, a number of resolutions that mention disability were adopted, including those on: Trafficking in persons, especially women and children: access to effective remedies for trafficked persons and their right to an effective remedy for human rights violations; Human rights of migrants; The right to a nationality: women and children; Human rights and arbitrary deprivation of nationality; The right to education: follow-up to Human Rights Council resolution 8/4; Human rights of internally displaced persons; and National institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights. Side Event:

During this session, a side event was held, hosted by Canada and the OHCHR, on violence against women and girls and disability. The event launched the report of the OHCHR on this topic (A/HRC/20/5) (PDF only), that was called for by resolution A/HRC/RES/17/11 of June 2011. The OHCHR received 78 contributions for the report, including 44 States' responses. Access to all contributions and IDA report on the side event.

Special Procedures

The Council held interactive dialogues with the special procedures mandate holders on the right to education, health, freedom of expression, summary executions, peaceful assembly and association, counterterrorism, transnational corporations, foreign debt, extreme poverty, discrimination against women, migrants, cultural rights, trafficking, independence of judge and lawyers, violence against women, racism, and Haiti.

Notably, the special rapporteurs on cultural rights and on education each paid good attention to the rights of persons with disabilities in their respective reports and country visits.
