Under the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities, a Thematic Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) has been established to support the engagement of persons with disabilities, their representative organizations and other relevant stakeholders to contribute to the monitoring of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (within the 2030 Agenda framework), under the umbrella of the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders mechanism.

This initiative is a continuation of the Disability Stakeholder Group established in advance of the 2015 Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, in which the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction was adopted. Since then, developments within the UN system have led to the formal establishment of the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities under the Major Groups and Other Stakeholders banner, which formalizes civil society engagement in the monitoring of 2030 Agenda Frameworks.

The Thematic Group on DRR is an open coordination mechanism led by one permanent and one alternate focal point. The mechanism is currently in the process of electing the next permanent and alternate global and regional focal points, to support the group's engagement in the Sendai monitoring process.
