Advancing equity in sexual and reproductive health and rights for persons with disabilities

This briefing note Advancing equity in sexual and reproductive health and rights for persons with disabilities sets out a CRPD-based approach making sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) fully inclusive of persons with disabilities. The document argues that SRHR is a fundamental human rights issue, grounded in the CRPD and closely connected to autonomy, equality, legal capacity, bodily integrity, freedom from violence, privacy and family life.

Despite these rights, persons with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to contraception, maternal health, fertility care, cancer screening, sexuality education and other services, alongside inaccessible facilities and information, discriminatory attitudes and inadequate training of health professionals. Women and girls with disabilities face particularly high risks of sexual and gender-based violence and coercive reproductive practices.
