IDA engages and supports OPDs at the 35th session of the CRPD Committee, full of relevant outcomes and celebrating the 20th anniversary of the CRPD

The CRPD Committee will hold its 35th session from August 12th to 27th, which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the CRPD, adopted in December 2006. Amid financial constraints for UN treaty bodies, the CRPD Committee is advancing key commitments, while the International Disability Alliance actively advocates for and supports OPD participation.

IDA has provided substantive inputs throughout the processes leading to the draft general comments nos. 9 and 10 on article 11 CRPD, general comment 11 on article 29 CRPD, and two guidelines on multiple and intersectional discrimination of women and girls with disabilities and on disability-based violence, which the Committee is most likely to adopt, making this session particularly important. IDA has also engaged in relevant substantive discussions related to these documents, including the days of general discussions on general comments and consultations at the last COSP in New York last June.

IDA representatives will engage at the CRPD Committee's panels to mark the 20th anniversary of the CRPD that takes place on 27 August. The panels will reflect on the achievements since the Convention’s adoption and address the ongoing efforts needed to ensure the rights of persons with disabilities worldwide. IDA will create additional platforms to commemorate the 20 years of strengthening the OPDs and advocating for disability inclusion, including through our campaign "Let's make it ours"!

For this session, the International Disability Alliance is providing financial and technical support to ensure participation by OPDs from the countries under review in this session, notably from Chile, Slovakia and Sri Lanka, and also technical support in coordination with its member, the European Disability Forum, to OPDs from Lithuania. National OPDs and IDA will hold strategic bilateral meetings with key partners to advance disability inclusion.
