Geneva, 17 September 2012 – Today the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD Committee) opens its 8th session (17-28 September 2012) in which it will review three States Parties, China Argentina and Hungary, and adopt a List of Issues on Paraguay.
The CRPD Committee is the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by the States Parties. All States parties are obliged to submit regular reports to the Committee on how the rights of persons with disabilities are being implemented. The Committee examines each report, holds an interactive dialogue with the State delegation in a public session and makes recommendations on the steps which should be taken to improve CRPD implementation. For the first time, the CRPD Committee is holding a two-week session.

During this session of the CRPD Committee, the following meetings and side events will also take place:
- 17 September morning, private briefing by DPOs and NGOs on States under Review
- 18,19 and 20 September, private side events hosted by IDA on China, Argentina and Hungary, respectively
- 21 September, side event hosted by the French Défenseur des Droits (DDD) and the Commission Nationale Consultative des Droits de l’Homme (CNCDH) on the role of independent mechanisms in monitoring the effective implementation of the CRPD at national and regional levels with the participation of EDF
- 25 September, private side event hosted by IDA on Paraguay
